Through the eyes of a strong-willed woman, the remarkable story of Irene Gut and the triumph of the human spirit over devastating tragedy comes to light when she risked her life to save a generation of Jews from the atrocities of the Holocaust. Although this Canadian film was released in Canada much more widely than the typical Canadian film, its distributor, Elevation Pictures, for some reason decided not to give the film a significant marketing budget. As a result, the film fared poorly at the box office and was pulled from most theaters by the end of its third week or the end of its release. (about 2 minutes) The opening title card tells us that the events take place in the east. The Polish border. This area of Poland has been invaded by the Soviet Union. I fully admit that I’ve done a poor job of keeping up with the latest movie releases over the past several years, as my knowledge has been mostly ad hoc based on what’s playing on my streaming services. I’d never heard of this movie until I saw it on Showtime a couple of nights ago, and I knew almost as much about any of the parties involved. I also rarely write reviews on IMDB, but in this case I’m drawn to an undeservedly mediocre overall rating skewed by one review that I find hilarious. So, on to the movie itself. As others have noted, the acting and production values may be uneven, but what a story! There’s more than a little bit of Schindler’s List here, but it’s made all the more unusual by the fact that the main character is only given a privileged position. Others have covered the plot well; I won’t go into that here, but as impressive as it is as a yarn, it’s even more so in the moral complexity and humanity of almost all the characters, even the Germans, and the vision of the threads. The filmmaker, while not the main villains here, holds the Soviets almost as accountable as the Nazis for their actions during this time, with a heavy emphasis on lies. «The Good Fight» is a misnomer (as are many other things unrelated to this film, such as the internment of Japanese and Americans, the bombing of our civilians in Germany and Japan, the indifference to the plight of European Jews, etc., etc.). I’m often moved by great cinema, but I must admit that I get a little more than tearful watching the further stories of the real-life characters unfolding during the closing credits (don’t miss it!). I give it somewhere between an 8 and a 9, but it does have its advantages, as it raises doubts about the excellence of the story and the need to increase the overall score here. I note that although this film is not Polish, it takes place there, forming a duo of the two best films I have seen in the last few years, along with «Forgotten Love.» Highly recommended.
